GWU Hospital

George Washington University Hospital

Professional services at the Emergency Department (ED) of the GW
Hospital are provided by a team of physicians and Physician's Assistants from the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates. The ED also hosts a variety of student and resident training programs of the George Washington University School of Medicine. Our academic goals are to train the next generation of medical providers and through our research program to advance knowledge in the field of emergency care and emergency services. The clinical goal of the Hospital and its professional staff is to provide all patients with the best emergency care experience by providing a high level of technical expertise in a compassionate, prompt and efficient manner. This goal is facilitated by the use of technology.

The GW Hospital ED is one of the only truly paperless departments in the region, using a computer-based electronic system for almost all patient care related activities. GW is also a pioneer in the use of bedside diagnostic modalities such as the use of sonography for diagnosis and treatment that leads to more prompt, accurate treatments. The ED receives 62,000 patient visits per year, is an integral component of the Hospital's level I Trauma Center, and is a designated regional treatment center for smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. The Hospital is also certified as a JCAHO stroke center, has an active interventional cardiology program, and a robust critical care medicine program. There is on-call coverage from most adult medical and surgical specialties.
