August: Sun Protection - Sunscreen and Sunburns

Warm summer weather is a great reason to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. However, too much time spent in the sun unprotected can have negative effects on your health; right now and in the future. It is important to guard yourself against sun exposure during trips to the beach, when attending outdoor events, and even during daily activities.

Sunburns are an immediate injury from sun exposure, but repeated sunburns can increase the risk of long-term health problems, like eye damage, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form or cancer in the United States

Melanoma is third most common, more dangerous, and frequently (65%-90%) caused by exposure to UV light/sunlight.

In 2003, 45,625 people in the United States were diagnosed with skin cancer!

Anyone can develop skin cancer, but people at greater risk are those:

  • with light natural skin color, blue or green eyes, red or blonde hair
  • with a family history of skin cancer
  • with a history of sunburns early in life
  • exposure to sun during work and/or play
  • skin that reddens, freckles, or burns easily

Tips for Keeping Safe in the Sun

  • Cover exposed skin with clothing
  • Wear wide-brimmed hats to protect the face, ears, and neck
  • Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays from the sun
  • Stay in the shade, including natural shade, indoor locations, and under umbrellas. The sun's rays are strongest and most damaging during the midday hours (10am-4pm).
  • Use sunscreen daily. Look for one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and has a SPF of 15 or higher. Remember that the sun's rays will reflect off water, snow, and sand.
