The Envoy Program

Program Summary

A joint venture between the Armed Forces Medical Services Department of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates’ Department of Emergency Medicine (GW DEM), this unique and internationally recognized center of excellence and continuing medical education program is designed to prepare military physicians intent on becoming future leaders in medicine.  A key vehicle to this end is to assist the physician-candidate in attaining a slot in a US-based residency.  The program is referred to as “Envoy,” representing the desire on the part of the Saudi government to not only enhance the medical training of their military physicians, but also to utilize these physicians as representatives of the Kingdom.

Program Length and Class Size

The program is eighteen (18) months long and no more than fifteen (15) participants per class is recommended.

Program Components

There are eight (8) core components that make up the Envoy program:

  1. Dedicated Mentorship:  Each candidate will be assigned a dedicated Physician-Mentor to guide them through the successful completion of all program aspects.
  2. Internationally Recognized Graduate Certificate (GWU):  Each candidate successfully completing this component will be awarded an internationally recognized Graduate Certificate through The George Washington University.
  3. Complete USMLE Preparation (GWU):  Kaplan Medical will assist each candidate in thorough preparation for Step 1 and Step 2 CK/CS of the USMLE examination.
  4. Clinical Observership:  Each candidate will spend a minimum of four shifts per month, side by side with their Physician-Mentor, observing the practice of medicine in their specialty.  The candidate will also attend Grand Rounds, relevant lectures and seminars.
  5. Specialized Courses in Military Medicine (GWU):  The candidates will receive highly specialized courses in advanced military medicine.  These courses will encompass tactical, operational and occupational military medicine.
  6. Continuing Medical Education Courses (GWU):  Candidates will be enrolled in an extensive series of American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Surgeons (ACS) and GWU-designed continuing medical education courses.
  7. Attendance at National Medical Conferences (GWU):  The program will provide for each candidate’s participation in at least one national medical conference in the area of their interest.
  8. Repeated Candidate Evaluation:  Candidates will receive written evaluations charting their progress and perceived areas where improvement may be required.  These evaluations, completed by each candidate’s mentor, will be used to provide objective markers throughout the course of the program.

Candidate Selection

Candidates are selected based upon a set of criteria which was established in close cooperation between program directors from The GW DEM and the General Directorate of Medical Services of the Armed Forces in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Candidates are interviewed jointly in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by representatives of the General Directorate and The GW DEM.  This insures both the highest caliber of candidate and allows The GW DEM to answer questions the candidates have prior to their selection and arrival in Washington.

Residency Acceptance

Prior to commencement of this program, an agreement was reached between program directors of The GW DEM and the General Directorate, as well as participating residency programs regarding criteria for acceptance, as well as the number of available slots.  It is understood that a candidate who successfully completes all aspects of the program, especially with regard to the clinical observership and final approval of the residency director, will be guaranteed their desired residency slot.
