Chair's Message

Shesser

Welcome to the website of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University.

We are the seventh academic Department of Emergency in the United States. The Department and its faculty and staff have been working since 1979 to expand the definition and scope of activity of Emergency Medicine practice, teaching, and research. We have developed an extensive series of educational and consulting activities described in this site that literally span the globe.

We currently provide physician and PA staffing for three hospitals, manage a hospital-based Hyperbaric/Wound Care program and have a broad range of academic and consulting activities. The Department has been divided into sections to help organize our academic focus. These sections include:

In addition to our medical school and EM residency programs, we offer Fellowships in International Emergency Medicine, Toxicology, Health Policy, EMS Disaster, and ED Administration. Consulting activities include work for the travel assistance industry, US commercial fishing and commercial shipping industries, and base operations support for the US military. As part of an academic multispecialty group practice, we actively collaborate in both the clinical and academic realms with our colleagues in other specialties.

We look forward to growth and development of all the programs described in this site and hope that we can continue to make contributions to societal well-being through direct clinical care, teaching, research, and consulting.

Sincerely,
Robert Shesser, MD
