Maritime Medical Access

Maritime Medical Access provides a vital link to the delivery of appropriate medical care for shipping vessels, aircraft, yachts and teams in remote locations. In operation since 1989, Maritime Medical Access delivers worldwide telemedicine advice in addition to clinical case management, repatriation, training, and recommendations for medical equipment/medicine chests. Providing twenty-four hour/day access to board certified emergency physicians has enabled companies to reduce unnecessary medical expenses and the risk of liability. Our affiliation with an academic center, The George Washington University, ensures current, state of the art, medical practices and case management for ill or injured crewmembers.

Maritime Medicine refers to the care of sick and injured patients on a variety of seafaring vessels in remote areas of the world. The scope of this field of medicine is broad and includes patients of all ages, with every conceivable form of illness or traumatic injury. The unique aspects of maritime medicine are a result of the characteristic problems encountered by those at sea, the logistical difficulties of assessing and treating these patients on the vessel, and the difficulty in arranging and monitoring definitive care.

The management of an effective medical program for maritime environments requires support from a qualified medical organization - specifically, an organization with experience in the maritime environment and an extensive clinical and occupational health background. This organization must have immediate access to a full spectrum of medical providers and function as a center of a domestic and international network of medical providers. The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) of The George Washington University Medical Center is such an organization.

Department of Emergency Medicine Physicians are highly sensitive to the complexities of providing health care in environments with limited resources. Maritime Medical Access physicians, located in the Emergency Department of The George Washington University Medical Center are accessible twenty-four hours a day via telephone, fax or telex. Below is an overview of the health services offered by Maritime Medical Access.
