The GW Department of Emergency Medicine provides emergency patient care to three hospitals, educates the next generation of health professionals and provides a wide range of innovative emergency medicine consulting services.

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) of The George Washington University is actively involved in a wide range of Emergency Medicine-related clinical, educational, research, and consulting programs. In support of our medical student, resident, and fellowship education programs and clinical research programs, the DEM staffs the ED’s of three hospitals including one hospital-based Hyperbarics / Wound Care program. The DEM also offers a wide range of Emergency Medicine consulting activities including: medical support for the travel assistance and commercial shipping industries, staffing solutions for remote clinics, telemedicine-related services, community-oriented emergency care programs.

Our mission is to provide excellent emergency patient care, train the next generation of health professionals, create new knowledge in the fields of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Management, and continually innovate.

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the George Washington University is sponsored by the George Washington University Medical Center in collaboration with the INOVA Fairfax Hospital Center. ABOUT THE GWU EMERGENCY MEDICINE RESEARCH SECTION

The Emergency Medicine Department has a very active research program, covering all aspects of clinical emergency medical care. Nearly all of the clinical faculty are active participants in research projects which include clinical, administrative and laboratory research.

The Department has a full time research coordinator, and clinical studies are supported by academic research associates who provide research coverage in the ED from 8am-midnight throughout the week.

Larissa May, MD - Selected for membership on the International Society for Disease Surveillance Meaningful Use Workgroup and awarded a K12 mentored patient oriented research career development award for her program of research on: "Antimicrobial Stewardship through MRSA diagnosis in ED patients with abscesses.

Ali Pourmand, MD, Hamid Shokoohi, MD and Kabir Yadav, MD: Elected to Fellow Status of ACEP

Larissa May, MD - Awarded the GW Institute for Biomedical Engineering Interdisciplinary Research Fund Grant for, "Decision Support System for Integrating Epidemic Surveillance, Regional Interdependencies, and Strategic Preparedness."

Kabir Yadav, MD- Acknowledged as one of the 24 Outstanding Reviewers for the Academic Emergency Medicine Journal at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting in Boston, MA.

Neal Sikka, MD- Awarded a McKesson Foundation award to study the use of SMS messaging to reduce emergency department visits for people with diabetes.

Hamid Shokoohi, MD and Venkatesh Bellamkonda-Athmaram, MD- Awarded an American College of Emergency Medicine section grant for "A Survey-based Study of the Point-of-Care Emergency Ultrasound Administrative Systems within North American Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Programs."

Keith Boniface, MD- Awarded an American College of Emergency Medicine section grant for "Ultrasound, critical care, and emergency medicine: bridging the gap with an ultrasound education initiative."
