The GW Department of Emergency Medicine provides emergency patient care to three hospitals, educates the next generation of health professionals and provides a wide range of innovative emergency medicine consulting services.

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) of The George Washington University is actively involved in a wide range of Emergency Medicine-related clinical, educational, research, and consulting programs. In support of our medical student, resident, and fellowship education programs and clinical research programs, the DEM staffs the ED’s of three hospitals including one hospital-based Hyperbarics / Wound Care program. The DEM also offers a wide range of Emergency Medicine consulting activities including: medical support for the travel assistance and commercial shipping industries, staffing solutions for remote clinics, telemedicine-related services, community-oriented emergency care programs.

Our mission is to provide excellent emergency patient care, train the next generation of health professionals, create new knowledge in the fields of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Management, and continually innovate.

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the George Washington University is sponsored by the George Washington University Medical Center in collaboration with the INOVA Fairfax Hospital Center. Overview of Worldwide Medical Services

Medical Consultative Services: The GW Department of Emergency Medicine works with multiple organizations to provide consultative support in emergency medicine, disaster medicine, emergency response and academic development. Consulting projects include:

  • Providing disaster medicine consultation and training to organizations responsible for disaster planning, preparedness and response
  • Delivering worldwide training and medical equipment consultation
  • Providing academic consultation on the development of Emergency Medicine and Physician Assistant programs
  • Providing medical school curriculum development and administrative operations consulting for hospital-based emergency services

 

Operations Management: The Department provides full service operations including but not limited to clinical staffing, facility management and pre-deployment and re-evaluation medical exams. Services include:

  • Providing 24 hour, 7 days a week clinical coverage - including physicians, PAs, NPs, EMT-Basics and Paramedics
  • Developing and managing EMS systems including all aspects of treatment and transport
  • Conducting mobile and clinic based pre-deployment and re-evaluation medical exams
  •  Delivering medical awareness and education programs for personnel living and working on bases

 

Academic Development: Through our international partnerships with hospitals and universities, the Department plays a critical role in advancing the field of academic Emergency Medicine. Academic development initiatives include:

  • Established the first PA program in the Middle East
  • Developing student and residency education training programs in emergency medicine
  •  Providing Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses
  • Delivering medical awareness and education programs for personnel living and working on bases

 

Training and Education: To support many of the Department's international medical services we continually offer training and education across a wide variety of focus areas. Training initiatives include:

  • Tactical medical training
  • Emergency Response and Incident Command training
  • Residency education training programs
  • Pre-hospital care training programs
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses
